Daum, France, created this adorable crystal teddy bear paperweight or ornamental sculpture in the late 1970s. The sculpture features a lovely sitting bear with dimensional carving. The figurine is signed on the underside with the Daum acid-etched "Flower + Nancy" mark*.
Note:
Animal representation has been one of Daum Manufacture's favorite themes since the beginning of the 20th Century. Almaric Walter and Antonin Daum, influenced by Naturalism and the Art Nouveau movement, were the driving forces behind the animal movement. The manufacturer then created decorative objects in crystal, pate de verre, and realistic animal sculptures with astonishing polychrome.
*The Daum "Nancy" mark, featuring the stylized flower, was used on pieces sold directly through the Daum factory in Nancy. This particular stamp corresponds to works produced between the 1960s and 2000; after 2000, the same design was updated annually with the corresponding year.
These pieces are considered official factory seconds and were available only through the factory store or during a once‑a‑year private sale for employees and local residents. Factory seconds typically show very small variations from the original design—such as tiny internal bubbles, slight distortions, or minor finishing differences. Some may also lack a final surface treatment. Pieces with major flaws were never sold.
Instead of the classic Daum signature, factory seconds carry this specific engraved mark. For most collectors, the distinctions are subtle enough that the original reason for the "second" designation is nearly impossible to detect.
