Modernist Michel Dumas Chess Set with Original Board, France, circa 1970
Designed by renowned French designer Michel Dumas and retailed by Roche Bobois, this striking chess set is a rare example of 1970s modernist design. Expertly crafted in France circa 1970, the set includes a large cast-aluminum board with alternating frosted and polished squares that create a sleek, reflective playing surface.
The thirty-two game pieces are sculpted from substantial plexiglass (Lucite), presented in clear and smoked gray tones. Their minimalist forms and luminous finish offer a bold contrast against the metallic board, resulting in a visually captivating display whether in play or showcased.
Originally housed in custom storage boxes bearing the Michel Dumas Creations logo, the set was also accompanied by a bespoke game table designed by Roche Bobois. This striking table integrates the chessboard into a black plexiglass base, topped with a transparent dome for protection and display. (Additional images available upon request showing the original table and an AD from Art et Decoration Magazine displaying the chess game).
This chess set embodies the refined craftsmanship and avant-garde spirit of 1970s French design.
